Victimizing events tend to be of high intensity and short duration (e.g., robbery, assault, serious accident, sudden death). Essentially, there are three stages of victimization:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Impact &#8211; Initial Reaction<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Signs and symptoms of stress to traumatic events such as shock, numbness, helplessness, vulnerability, disorientation, perspiration, physical agitation, disbelief, anger, fear, frustration, confusion, guilt, grief, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Recoil<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cognitive attempts to deal with the event<\/li>\n<li>Denial &#8211; trying to go on as though nothing has happened<\/li>\n<li>Blaming others<\/li>\n<li>Self-blame &#8211; \u201cI must have deserved this\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Obsessive &#8211; repeated return to the event and its ramifications<\/li>\n<li>Compensatory fantasies and planning &#8211; phobic reactions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Reorganization<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Return to a state of equilibrium<\/li>\n<li>Victim calls upon supports for help<\/li>\n<li>Focus on life-enhancing rather than simply existing<\/li>\n<li>Obsessive fears and reactions are modulated<\/li>\n<li>Victim is better able to cope with occasional flashbacks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Secondary victimization<\/strong> may occur because the victim is subjected to someone who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cannot comprehend what the victim is struggling with<\/li>\n<li>Minimizes or disparages the experience and feelings of the victim<\/li>\n<li>Is in denial of their own losses and therefore it is difficult to recognize someone else\u2019s suffering<\/li>\n<li>Lacks relevant information about post-traumatic stress disorder<\/li>\n<li>Believes in the \u201cJust World Theory\u201d that says the world is rational and the consequences are in accordance with justice (people get what they deserve)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Resources &amp; Information Understanding Victimization Victimization is the event or incident leading to a victim state.
